About BSP

Our Background

What is

Better Seafood Philippines?

BSP is a USAID-funded initiative implemented by Sustainable Fisheries Partnership under the Fish Right program. The Fish Right Program is a five-year partnership between the Government of the Philippines and the United States government, through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), to improve marine biodiversity and the fisheries sector in three marine key biodiversity areas. The program runs from 2018 to 2023.

Mission & Values

BSP seeks to promote responsible sourcing  practices along the Philippines seafood supply chains as well as consumers’ responsible seafood choices. In BSP, we understand that responsibility is the path forward to improve the environmental performance of Philippine fisheries, safeguard livelihoods of fishing-dependent communities as well as to support the fishing industry and our country in meeting the goals of the UN 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

1.

Environmental Responsibility

Seafood sourced in ways that reduce negative impacts to fish stocks, environment, and to the people who depend on it.

2.

Legal Compliance

Complying with applicable laws and providing traceability for products to ensure high moral practices.

3.

Human Wellbeing

Good practices that enable social responsibility in seafood sourcing to ensure sustainable livelihoods of supply chain actors

Our Story

As part of the sustainable supply chain workstream, SFP/BSP through USAID Fish Right program fostered partnerships with institutional seafood buyers to link organized fishers’ groups and incentivize the adoption of responsible fishing practices. To complement the demand that stems from these partnerships, SFP/BSP saw the importance of building the supply, developing fishery products that employ innovative processes, and making these available to institutional buyers. This entails ensuring that producers have the capacity to properly handle, consolidate, and process fish, and consequently meet market requirements.
